About

The visionary's journey is unique. In many vocations, there is a clear pathway: education, training, degrees/certifications, job, promotion, etc. But for visionaries…things are a bit murkier.

But what if they weren’t? My coaching practice is based on the premise that we often see attaining a goal as “miraculous,” rather than as a result of a plan of action. This can be seen in history and in fiction.

Consider the case of Helen Keller. What was her biggest challenge? Contrary to what many believe, it is not that she was blind and deaf. It was that the people around her, her parents and family, were committed to her being unable to see or hear.

This was not out of malice; in fact, it was quite the opposite. They thought her limitations were impossible to overcome; so, in their misguided love, they tried to shield her from any discomfort- even if it meant never encouraging her to push past those limitations.

Enter Annie Sullivan. She knew that Helen could communicate; she knew that ‘impossible’ had no place in her work with Helen, and that love, the love of fierce advocacy, produced sight and hearing in ways that the Kellers never imagined. And they called her “The Miracle Worker.”

Then there’s Wilbur. It never occurred to anyone on the Arable farm that the pig would live to a ripe old age…he was born to be eaten. No one believed that inevitability could be changed-

Except for Charlotte.

Charlotte knew that with patience and hard work, minds and hearts could be changed. She told everyone that Wilbur was special, she showed them something they had never considered before, and she saved his life. And they called it “a miracle.”

Charlotte and Annie both knew that goals aren’t always ‘miracles’…They are simply ‘results.’ Each of them started by identifying the result, the destination they wanted to reach, then mapped out the road to get to it. Step by step, day by day. Choice by choice.

In each case (and in hundreds of others) one person’s (or spider’s) belief that nothing is impossible changed reality for many. We can each be that person for ourselves and each other.

Can it be scary to strive for something that seems out of the realm of possibility? Of course! But fear can be worked through. Fear can be harnessed. Fear can be a catalyst.

What’s your impossible dream? Can you see it on the horizon? Let’s draw your map and get your feet on the road
